The Art of Form: Perspectives from The West

The Sausalito Center for the Arts, in collaboration with the National Sculpture Society (NSS), presents The Art of Form: Perspectives from The West, a juried sculpture exhibition showcasing contemporary works from 40 accomplished sculptors across the western United States. Opening May 17, the exhibit features 57 works selected from over 100 submissions.

This dynamic exhibition celebrates the power and presence of sculpture—its dimensionality, tactile appeal, and ability to transform space. Jurors include celebrated sculptors Paige Bradley and Rod Zullo, both NSS Fellows, along with SCA Executive Director Shiva Pakdel. The exhibit emphasizes traditional craftsmanship and natural inspiration, a hallmark of NSS’s 130-year mission to promote excellence in sculpture.

A $1,000 Best of Show award, sponsored by the Fantasy Fountain Fund, will be granted to one artist during the run of the show.

Set against the scenic backdrop of the San Francisco Bay, Sausalito offers the perfect setting for this immersive art experience. The Sausalito Center for the Arts provides an expansive, accessible venue where form and creativity come to life.

Visitors are invited to explore sculpture in its fullest expression—from classical techniques to bold contemporary statements—in this landmark West Coast exhibit.

You can be part of the arts by volunteering here.

Paul Morin

Utopian Dreams: A Retro-Futurist Romance

The Sausalito Center For The Arts is proud to feature the work of award winning artist, Paul Morin. Paul’s portraits are in public and private collections around the world.  A semi-finalist in the prestigious BP Portrait Award in London, he most recently was chosen to participate, for the second time,  in the "de Young Open" at the de Young Museum in San Francisco.  He has also won First Prize in Painting and a Director's Award of Merit at the annual Salon at the Triton Museum in Santa Clara. Paul's unique combination of traditional technique with modern sensibility confront the viewer with an individual sense of scale.  With empathy and humor, Paul's work celebrates the human spirit and captures the unique look and expression of each sitter.

Paul will exhibit original painting from Utopian Dreams: A Retro-Futurist Romance.

We have been dreaming of the future since we first began to dream! Sometimes these dreams were called "Prophesy," sometimes "Heresy" and sometimes it was just called being a "Visionary." Dreaming of a future Utopia (or Dystopia) is nothing new but since the technological revolutions of the Industrial Age and especially of the 20th century, the dreams have become increasingly more real.

What does the future look like to you?  What did it  look like 60 years ago?  Flying cars, teleportation, alien life forms mixing among us (why can't we have cool stuff like that now?)

In the 1960s the space race, pop art and the cold war clashed  inspiring a new look for the 20th century - bolder, slicker, sexier and exciting. It was a defiant reaction to the anxiety of a world in flux. Everything was changing, from youth culture and sexual mores to technology and the threat of "Mutually Assured Destruction!"

In these works, I combine several techniques which I have been using for many years - flat pattern, dimensional painting in monochrome and color, glazes and silver leaf. This creates a kind of "painted collage" - and not only a visual collage. By creating an image that oftentimes juxtaposes figures inspired by the past with elements of a real or imagined future, I seek to  collage the "greatest hits" of our human history.

I offer a future that never was from a past that we can never re-capture. A reflection of a utopian dream that is just out of reach.
