Sausalito Center for the Arts Presents an Exhibition Celebrating the Artists of West Marin
Spotlight West Marin opens in September.

SAUSALITO, CA — The Sausalito Center for the Arts (SCA) announces Spotlight West Marin, an exhibition on view from September 16 to October 18 at SCA's gallery at 750 Bridgeway in Sausalito. The exhibition brings together 25 notable artists who live and work in West Marin, offering Bay Area audiences a rare and expansive look at one of Northern California's most distinctive creative communities.

West Marin, defined by its dramatic Pacific coastline, agricultural valleys, and a remarkable sense of distance from urban life, has long attracted artists drawn to its light, landscape, and spirit of independence and counterculture. Spotlight West Marin honors that tradition by presenting an unusually intimate curatorial framework: each participating artist has been invited to hang their own work on a dedicated 8-by-8-foot panel, choosing pieces that best represent their practice and their relationship to the region. The result is not a single curatorial vision but 25 individual ones, each reflecting a sustained and personal engagement with place.

The exhibition spans a wide range of media, including drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, and woodworking, and features artists of varied ages, backgrounds, and levels of recognition, including works presented by the estates of several legacy artists. All works will be available for purchase.

“As a founding board member of SCA and former resident of West Marin, I am thrilled to see this cultural collaboration,” said artist Kay Carlson, who currently works from a studio in Sausalito. “The highlight of living in West Marin was the intimacy and heart of community there, which empowered me to found Marin Open Studios.

“West Marin has always existed slightly outside the art world's usual gaze, and that distance is exactly what gives the work created there its character. That distinction is what we intend to bring to Sausalito and the larger Bay Area with this exhibition."

Participating artists are: Tom Biagini, Gordon Bryan, Tripp Carpenter, Anne Faught, James Finnegan, Susan Gonzalez, Sha Sha Higby, Arthur Holman, Tim Horn, Marty Knapp, Judith Selby Lang, Richard Lang, Liz Lauter, Joyce Laws, Patrick Maloney, Bruce Mitchell, Axel Nelson, Michael O'Shea, Todd Pickering, Carlos Porrata, Sally Robertson, Ernesto Sanchez, Wendy Schwartz, Kevin Smith, Connie Smith Siegal, Brandon Stieg, Inez Storer, Justine Tot Tatarsky, Justin Thomas, John Torrey, Nicasio Woodworks, Patricia Yenawine, and Janis Yerington.

Spotlight West Marin is presented with support from the San Geronimo Valley Cultural Center.

Spotlight West Marin opens to the public on Wednesday, Sept. 16, and the opening reception is on Sunday, Sept. 20, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. The exhibition remains on view through Sunday, Oct. 18.
